As you travel into Waterford City, at the Tower Hotel turn onto Dunmore Road, continue for a further 3 miles passing Regional Hospital and take the fourth turn to left where you will find the entrance to the ferry 500 yards further on left hand side. The ferry will transport you across the channel and the centuries, as within minutes you are in a forest upon a driveway that a hundreds of years ago was a rough track carved out by medieval monks. Ahead the castle appears, proud and immense, its corners folded back in cloud-grey coloured stone. Pass through the carved granite arch and studded oak doors to come upon the great cavernous fireplace dominating all around it. On the chimney breast, raised proud from the stone like some giant ornate jewel, is the Fitzgerald coat of arms, its intricacies and embellishments recreated in the vivid colours on the hand-woven carpet at your feet. You have arrived at Waterford Castle.
